As I have studied fine art and philosophy my work has a strong theoretical process behind it. Studying Sartre, Lacan, Bolt and Barthes has given me a strong critical framework to guide my artistic process. In my work I question the traditional ideas in portraiture and attempt to broaden what the word can mean. By removing the gaze and also perhaps the face I hope to draw more attention to the details present in posture pose and physical quirks that appear in a person’s stance etc. Although my etchings lean more to the traditional I try to very subtly guide the viewer away from solely engaging with the facial features and add objects or partially hide the face to create a performative, engaging, narrative which I hope the viewer can interact emotionally with.
